The Labor Department reports an 84% increase in layoffs due to ‘company needs’ in November.
«A sharp increase in layoffs linked to ‘company needs’ was recorded in November, compared to the same period last year, according to data reported by the Labor Department.» (CNN Chile, 2019).
«The figures provided by the State agency indicate that 62,049 people were removed from their source of employment for this reason (established in article 161, paragraph 1, of the Labour Code) in the last month, which is 84.5 per cent more than in 2018. (CNN Chile, 2019).
«In an average month the number of layoffs due to the company’s needs fluctuates between 30 and 40 thousand, and now in November this figure reached 62 thousand, which is a clear reflection of the social issue that has meant that many companies are having to lay off workers to maintain their operations». (CNN Chile, 2019).
«The data provided also indicates that 66,792 people had to leave their jobs due to the termination and non-renewal of their contract, which represents a 21% increase over last year». (CNN Chile, 2019).
With the collapse of consumption and the outbreak of the humanitarian crisis and conflicts in Chile, that is the solution for companies to maintain their operations.
If a country is facing high rates of unemployment, then it follows that most people accumulate more debt than is necessary for them to be able to meet their financial obligations, such as mortgages, car loans and other bills. Paying off the debts, of course, complicates the family economy. In this case, the government will be forced to increase taxes in order to function properly without mentioning what serves needs such as social protection and other vital obligations. In this way, unemployment greatly affects the economy.
Unemployment affects the economy in a way that is associated with the flow of money. A steady cash flow is essential to any economy that wants to prosper, both inward and outward. Failure to achieve this leads to slow economic growth, which in turn makes it more difficult to turn the tide in the future.
On the one hand, having unemployed workers means a large amount of unused labour and therefore goods that are not being produced, if we produce fewer goods, we will be able to satisfy fewer needs. That is one of the serious effects of unemployment.
On the other hand, the governments of countries suffering from unemployment must pay a subsidy to the unemployed, which increases state spending, and this money cannot be used for other purposes.
Adam Smith defined that employment was determined by the variation of wages, trying to say: that when wages were high, unemployment was generated, which also means that in such circumstances of very low consumption, the company has to decrease its expenditure, which at that time is high due to the low level of income.
