The Government approves the increase of the minimum wage to EUR 900 and the salary increase for civil servants by 2019

«The Council of Ministers approved today in Barcelona the increase of the minimum interprofessional salary (MIS) to 900 euros per month for fourteen payments from January 1st, which means an increase of 22.3% with respect to its current amount of 735.9 euros per month. This is the highest increase since 1977». (elEconomista, 2018).

«This increase in the SMI is the result of the agreement reached by the Executive with Unidos Podemos for the 2019 State Budget. Specifically, the minimum wage will be 30 euros per day, 900 euros per month and 12,600 euros per year. For temporary and seasonal workers, the minimum wage will be 42.62 euros per day, and for domestic workers, 7.04 euros per hour». (elEconomista, 2018).

«The Council of Ministers also gave the green light today to the salary increase of public employees for 2019, which will be at least 2.25%, a figure that can be added to 0.25% linked to the evolution of GDP and another 0.25% from additional funds». (elEconomista, 2018).

According to the Government, the aim of this increase is to combat in-work poverty, raise the standard of living of the lowest-paid people, who are often young people and women, and encourage a more dynamic wage increase.

On the other hand, the remarkable increase in the SMI by 2019 may condition the evolution of the economy and employment, both in the short and the long term, if the basis for significant productivity growth is not laid, the relationship between the minimum wage and unemployment must be emphasized, since if the SMI increases above the increase in productivity, job creation could be slowed down.

However, the increase in the SMI may affect other variables such as the collection of social security contributions, personal income tax and VAT. The increase also makes consumption increase, the economy acquires dynamism, which favors the general economic growth.
